Coyotes open new season with long road trip
By Bud L. Ellis
To begin the 2010-11 National Hockey League season, the Phoenix Coyotes will leave the desert behind for a two-game matchup in the Czech Republic.
The Coyotes will open the new season against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 in Prague, as part of the NHL’s season-opening event in Europe.
Before long, Phoenix will be back in the Great Southwest, looking to build on a season in which the Coyotes won 50 games to set a team record. In the home opener Oct. 16, the Coyotes will meet Detroit, the team that bounced Phoenix from the playoffs last season.
Phoenix finished fourth in the Western Conference a year ago. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, they met a Red Wings team in round one that was playing its best hockey of the season, falling to Detroit in seven games.
Leading scorer Shane Doan is back this season, as is standout goaltender Ilya Bryzalov, who went 42-20-6 in goal last season.
